Bishop and Doctor of the Church
"Athanasius was born in Alexandria of Egypt in 295, and is the most dramatic and disturbing figure of the rich gallery Fathers of the Church. Stubborn defender of orthodoxy in the great Arian crisis, immediately after the Council of Nicea, paid their heroic resistance to the heresy with five exile decreed by the emperor Constantine, Constantius, Julian and Valens. Arius, a priest left the bosom of the Church of Alexandria, denying the substantial equality between the Father and the Son, threatened to attack the heart of Christianity. In fact, if Christ is the Son of God, and he is not God, what is reduced redemption of mankind?
In a world suddenly woke Arian, as the famous phrase of St. Jerome, was still up a great fighter, Athanasius, who at age 33 was elevated to the prestigious bishopric of Alexandria. He had the temper of the fighter and when he had to battle the opponents was the first to leave lance in hand: "I'm glad to have to defend myself," he wrote in his Apology for the escape. Athanasius had courage even to sell, but knowing who was dealing with (among his slanderous accusations were that he had murdered the Bishop Arsenio, who later turned up alive and healthy), no waiting at home to come and tie. Sometimes his escapes were sensational. He himself speaks of them with verve.
He spent his last two exiles in the desert, accompanied by his monk friends, those sympathetic to the Christian life anarchic, although escaping from the normal social structures and ecclesiastical organization, were in the company of an authoritarian and intransigent as bishop Athanasius. For them he wrote the embattled bishop of Alexandria a great work, "History of the Arians", dedicated to the monks, which left us a few pages, but enough to openly reveal the temperament of Athanasius: he knows that talking to men who do not understand the metaphors, and then calls the spade a spade: it mocks the emperor, calling him disrespectful nicknames, and also makes fun of the opponents, but speaks enthusiastically of the truths that interest you, to start the faithful from the clutches of the false shepherds.
involuntary During the numerous pilgrimages came to the West, Rome and Trier, in which Egyptian monasticism became known as a state of life organized in a very original in the desert, presenting the ideal monk in the striking figure of a hermit, San Antonio, who wrote the famous Life, which can be considered as a kind of manifesto of monasticism. He died in 373 "(Athanasius, bishop and doctor of Holy Church, May 2 Author: P. Angel Love
